Government of Madhya Pradesh started a project on turtle at Barahi under National Chambal Sanctuary Madhya Pradesh with the aim of conservation and enhancement of turtles population. Out of 9 species of turtle found in National Chambal Sanctuary, 3 species namely (I) Red Crowned-Roofed Turtle (Batagur kachuga), (II) Narrow-headed Softshell Turtle (Chitra indica), (III) Indian Softshell Turtle (Nilssonia gangetica) taken in first phase. The project at Barahi will take the first batch of eggs of above three species this year. With the establishment of this project/Rearing centre at Barahi. National Chambal Sanctuary will equipped with infrastructure to tackle any crises besides enhancement of population of above three endangered species. In future this project on the basis of field studies may include other species of Turtles also. This project also provide data and information for better management of National Chambal Sanctuary.
